Maintaining your pet’s oral hygiene is important to overall health.
Untreated dental problems can lead to gum inflammation, infection, tooth loss, oral pain, and even organ damage. Your veterinarian will perform a dental exam during your pet’s annual checkup to determine whether any preventative care or treatments are required.
These exams entail:
- An assessment of the oral cavity, lymph nodes and jaw
- A look at your pet’s teeth
- A check for bleeding, inflammation, or masses
- Any pockets around the roots of the teeth
In some cases, your pet’s dental exams will reveal the need for immediate extraction or surgery. In other cases, the exam performed during a dental checkup will highlight the need for a more thorough sedated examination. Your vet will inform you.

Signs of Dental Problems
Signs of dental problems can be instrumental for determining the need for a dental exam.
These can include:
- Bad breath
- Facial swellings
- Draining wounds
- Sneezing
- Bleeding or discharge from the mouth or nose
- Dropping food or chewing only on one side of the mouth
- Pawing at the mouth
- Tooth grinding
- Discolored teeth
- Teeth covered in tartar
- Bleeding from the mouth
